About the Coronation exhibition:

To mark the coronation of King Charles III, Lambeth Palace and Lambeth Palace Library collections are bringing you an exhibition of materials relating to previous coronations from that of Henry I in 1100 to that of our new sovereign.

The Library exhibition will run from 12 April to 13 July 2023 with highlights that include the manuscript coronation service prepared for William III and Mary II, Archbishop Wake’s notes for the coronation of George II, a letter from George VI thanking Archbishop Lang for his part in the coronation ceremony, and the Bible upon which Elizabeth II swore her coronation oath.

Until 14 June 2023 the Library will host a display of artefacts from the Palace collections used in previous coronations, including the cope and mitre worn by Archbishop Fisher in 1953 and the large banners from the 1902 coronation from which Archbishop Frederick Temple had to read the service because of his failing eyesight. We also have on display the Bible used during the Coronation service of King Charles III for the swearing of his oaths.

Library Tour (pm)

02/09/2022 at 14:00 15:30

You are invited to join a free tour of the new Lambeth Palace Library building. Come and see some areas not usually open to the public, such as the eighth floor conference room and terrace (with its spectacular views) and our Conservation Studio. The tour will explain the history of the library and its collection, as well as our journey to a brand new, purpose-built home for the books and documents we care for.

There will also be an opportunity to view our current exhibition, featuring a range of materials from our collection.

These tours coincide with Lambeth Palace’s garden open days which support a different charity each month. For September we are supporting Lucy’s Air Ambulance.

Booking is essential as places are limited. Please note that tickets must be booked individually.

Tickets can be booked via Eventbrite at: https://Lambeth-palace-library-september-guided-tour.eventbrite.co.uk
