Archbishops of Canterbury

It is only from the mid-nineteenth century that substantial records were kept from each Archbishop and before that the main source for an Archbishop’s career was their register (if it survived). Therefore, every item concerning or connected to an Archbishop is a great addition to the Library. The Friends’ acquisitions in this area have made many publications and manuscripts detailing aspects of Archbishops’ public and private lives available to readers. Fragments of the Life of St Thomas Becket, first editions of works by Archbishops Peckham and Bradwardine, and a panegyric to Archbishop Whitgift, are only a few examples of how the Library’s holdings on Archbishops have been enhanced by the Friends.
